Pixar's director of 3D production confirms that 3D rereleases of The Incredibles and Ratatouille are in the works at the studio.
More than most studios, Disney has enjoyed the ability to rerelease many of their timeless classics catalogue into theaters with the advent of popular 3D cinema over the last four years. From The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast to Pixar’s Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc., the larger studio has a seemingly endless pool to draw from. Yet, early last year, reports manifested that the practice may be coming to an end after several 3D ventures were supposedly scuttled.
Now, it seems that reports of the 3D rerelease market’s imminent demise were greatly exaggerated, as Josh Hollander, director of 3D production at Pixar, has confirmed that 3D rereleases of beloved Pixar films The Incredibles and Ratatouille are in the works.
“Right now we’re working on The Incredibles, which is a lot of fun in 3D,” Hollander said, according to Screen Daily while at the 3D Creative Summit. “I’m not sure what the release strategy for it will be.”
At first glance, this could indicate simply a 3D release on Blu-ray, however, Screen Daily says Hollander was talking directly about re-releases.
“We have a version of Ratatouille, which works really well in 3D and we’re trying to figure out exactly what the release strategy for that will be,” Hollander said.
For Pixar aficionados, particularly those with their own new young demographic from the last 10 years, this may be happy news indeed.
