Two things you never knew you wanted, Spring Breakers 2 and a remake of Maniac Cop are on the way. Wait til you see who's writing them.
Which seems more unlikely to you, Spring Breakers 2 or a remake of Maniac Cop? It's probably Spring Breakers 2, as no genre flick of yesteryear is immune to the remake/reboot. Both are coming some time next year from French film distribution company Wild Bunch.
Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is the story of, well...according to Screen Daily"the Spring Breakers do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them."Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is "not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” according to Wild Bunch's Vincent Maraval, who also promises that some cast members from the first film will return.
Unsurprisingly, Jonus Akerlund will direct. But quite surprisingly, Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) is writing the film. That puts a bit of a new spin on things.
Speaking of surprising writers, the man writing the screenplay for the Maniac Copremake is none other than the writer behind the comics that Captain America: The Winter Soldier was based on, Ed Brubaker. Original Maniac Cop visionary William Lustig is producing along with Drive's Nicolas Winding Refn.
Wild Bunch also announced a new Paul Verhoeven rape/revenge thriller. “Casting is being finalised," Maraval said. "It’s a very intelligent script but it’s also pure Verhoeven, extremely erotic and perverted, so the actress has to be prepared to take that on.”
Right. Nothing uncomfortable about that.
