Power Rangers are coming back to the big screen courtesy of Lionsgate and Saban. We've got the details...
The Power Rangers are coming back to the movies. Lionsgate have announced that a new live-action Power Rangers feature film is on the way, which sounds like it will be the start of an entirely new franchise.
It's unclear at this point whether the new Power Rangers movie will exist in the same continuity as the numerous TV shows. In fact, some of the language Saban and Lionsgate use make this sound like a reboot of the original Power Rangers TV show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. See for yourself:
The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.
“Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level,” said Power Rangerscreator Haim Saban. “They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Gamesto Twilightand Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.”
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. “The Power Rangersstories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come.”
This isn't the first time the Power Rangers have made it to the big screen. At the height of the initial wave of Power Rangers popularity, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie was released in 1995 to considerable success, while 1997's Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie met with less impressive results. But with a seeming resurgence in kaiju and giant robots at the cinema, such as last year's terrific but underappreciated Pacific Rim and the early positive buzz on Warner Bros.'Godzillareboot, now might be the time for a mega-budget Power Rangers movie. Presumably one that doesn't have to recycle footage from older Japanese TV shows for its big action sequences.
