Universal has been getting high on its own supply. The studio is in talks with British filmmaker David Yates to direct the remake the gangster classic, Scarface. They have been at work refining the script with several screenwriters. The new Scarface is being described as a reboot, not a remake. Like the first two versions, the new Scarface will deal with an immigrant chasing the “American Dream.” It is being produced by Martin Bregman who produced the Brian De Palma version along with March Schmuger, who used to be the head of Universal.
The original 1932 Scarface, starring Paul Muni, George Raft and Ann Dvorak, was a Howard Hughes production. It was directed by Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson. The screenplay was written by Ben Hecht the novel by Armitage Trail. It dealt with the rise and fall of bootlegger Tony Carmonte. The 1982 Scarface was directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone. It starred Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert Loggia. The remake followed Cuban exile Tony Montana, who came to America as a political exile and found his fortune in cocaine. Both films are classics and considered iconic.
David Yates directed the last four Harry Potter movies. The British director usually works at Warner Bros. He is known for the British TV political thriller miniseries State Of Play from 2003 and 2005’s Emmy-winning The Girl In The Café.
Scarface was the nickname for Al Capone, who got the nickname after being sliced across the face in a bar owned by Frankie Yale for insulting a man's sister.
