James Cameron and 20th Century Fox announce new writers for THREE Avatar sequels to be shot simultaneously for consecutive December releases beginning in 2016.

In a surprise announcement, the Avatar sequels are getting some scripters.

The fact that there are Avatar sequels in production or that they are bringing in new scribing blood is not the shock (though writer/director Cameron had claimed to be writing the treatments himself for years), but the announcement that there would be THREE sequels surely was.

In a report from Deadline, Cameron and Fox have tapped four screenwriters, though one is pair, to pen three Avatar follow-ups simultaneously. This is also set to be the lead-up to Cameron lensing all three projects at once next year.

With writers as varied as Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) on one film, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Jurassic Park IV) on another, and Shane Salerno (Savages, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem) on the other, it is clear that Fox and Cameron have a lot of confidence in cooking with a lot of pots on the stove.

Cameron is set to work closely with all the writers as he mounts one of the most ambitious film projects Hollywood has ever attempted. Not since Peter Jackson filmed the Lord of the Rings Trilogy all at once has a filmmaker (or studio) attempted to make something so sprawling and so simultaneous.

Deadline quotes Cameron to say, “In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put onscreen.”

Each film is slated for a December release beginning in 2016 and carrying on into 2017 and 2018. It will be seven years since the first Avatar when the sequel drops.
