Fantastic Four director Josh Trank has joined up with Lucasfilm for a Star Wars spinoff movie.
Add Josh Trank's name to the list of directors who will helm a Star Wars film in the next few years. The Chronicle and Fantastic Four director was announced by Lucasfilm this afternoon. No other details are available about the film or its potential release date at this time.
"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."
As for Mr. Trank he says, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."
Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is also directing one of the standalone Star Wars movies. Edwards' still unknown film will be released on December 16th, 2016. We can't imagine we'll see Josh Trank's any time before 2017. This probably means that Trank is now unlikely to direct Fantastic Four 2, currently scheduled for a July 14th, 2017 release from Fox.
As for what these movies might be? The two most likely (or at least the most talked about) remain "origin stories" for Boba Fett and Han Solo. Given that Solo is said to have a "massive" role in Star Wars: Episode VII, a Han Solo prequel (I know, we shudder when we say that word in relation to Star Wars, too) might be timely. Then again, Disney could skip the aggravation of re-casting iconic roles by fleshing out supporting characters from the new Star Wars saga, as well.
We imagine we'll hear lots more quite soon.
