The reason for Jupiter Ascending's delay to 2015

Edge Of Tomorrow may have been the reason that The Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending has been delayed to next year...

Last week, it was revealed that Warner Bros was pushing back its second standalone sci-fi blockbuster of the summer, Jupiter Ascending, to 2015. The film, which stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, has been directed by the Wachowskis, and was originally set for release at the end of July. It's all change though, as Warner Bros has now announced a new release date of February 6th 2015 for the movie.

So what happened? One explanation is that it allows a little more time to work on the editing and visual effects for the movie. But it seems that the real reason is linked to Edge Of Tomorrow. Fearing unimpressive box office numbers on the Tom Cruise-headlined movie, which opened at third place at the US box office last weekend, Warner Bros opted to move Jupiter Ascending, else risk two potentially sizeable losses in the same financial quarter.

Edge Of Tomorrow, incidentally, is playing well outside of the US, and should comfortably match its near-$180m production budget. The film is up to $140m worldwide so far, and continues to enjoy strong word of mouth (rightly so, too). However, it's not the juggernaut that a strongly-reviewed Tom Cruise film once would have been. And that, ultimately, seems to be what's cost Jupiter Ascending its summer slot.

Tom Cruise needs to stop starring in these interesting sounding sci-fi films that i would otherwise go see (Tom Cruise is terrible). Same goes for Will Smith (though he is slightly less terrible).

Looking forward to Jupiter Ascending, though.
