Tom Hiddleston will play celebrated country artist Hank Williams in an upcoming biopic.
From the god of mischief to one of the gods of American music. Tom Hiddleston will play Hank Williams Sr. in I Saw the Light. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this (other than Hiddleston's generally magnetic screen presence) is that the actor will actually sing Hank Williams songs in the movie.
While Hiddleston's singing ability is not the biggest secret, it's a relief when filmmakers are able to actually secure the rights to the songs for these movies. Recent Jimi Hendrix biopic, All is By My Side, was unable to use any of the iconic guitarist's well-known tunes.
Hank Williams may be best known for songs like "Hey Good Lookin',""Your Cheatin' Heart," and particularly "Move it on Over" which has received endless airplay on classic rock radio in the last few decades thanks to a cover version by George Thorogood and the Destroyers. His hard living lifestyle and struggles with addiction make for the usual biopic fodder, but hopefully I Saw the Light will find a way to step away from the pitfalls of movies of this type.
I Saw the Lightis based on Hank Williams: The Biography by Colin Escott, George Merritt, and William McEwan. Marc Abraham is writing and producing I Saw the Light for Brett Ratner's RatPac Entertainment.
