The adaptation of Lois Lowry's modern young adult classic gives us a new look.
The Giver has circulated in classrooms all across America since its 1993 release. Lois Lowry's young adult, sci-fi tale emphasizes the importance of individuality in a dystopian setting not too dissimilar to Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. In The Giver's world, society has eliminated the world's problems, like war and starvation, by instituting sameness. All people are assigned roles in society, and the novel's protagonist, Jonas, is assigned the weighty task of being the "Receiver of Memories," the person who stores all the information about the world before the sameness was implemented. Jonas receives these memories from the Giver and begins to question whether society really is better off in its new ways.
A film adaptation of the novel has been in the works for quite some time, and now this August it will finally see the light of day. The film has been a passion project for one of its stars, Jeff Bridges, who stars as the Giver. Originally, Bridges intended to make the film with his father in the role, but now he himself is old enough to tackle the part. Jonas will be played by relative newcomer Brenton Thwaites and the main antagonist will be played by the incredible, Oscar-winning powerhouse, Meryl Streep.
The film also features Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard as Jonas' parents and Taylor Swift in her second on-screen role. The Giver is directed by Phillip Noyce, most famous for his work on Clear and Present Danger and Salt.
The new poster for the film is below, and make sure to check out The Giver when it hits theaters on August 15.
