Trailer for The Dog, a look at the man behind Dog Day Afternoon, released.
A Dog Day Afternoon is one of the great bank robbery films of all time. Starring Al Pacino and directed by Sidney Lumet, it caught the wild era of New York City in the summer heat. A new film called The Dog, directed by Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren looks at the man behind the movie, John Wojtowicz, aka “Sonny” in Dog Day Afternoon.
The trailer for The Dog was released today. It teases “Lover. Husband. Soldier. Activist. Mama's Boy. Bank Robber. The story behind the man that inspired Al Pacino's legendary role in the Oscar®-Nominated Dog Day Afternoon.”
John Wojtowicz came of age in the sexually liberated sixties and put the most hedonistic rock stars’ sexual appetites to shame. In announcing the trailer, Drafthouse film says Wojtowicz had “multiple wives and lovers, both women and men. In August 1972, he attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to finance his lover's sex-reassignment surgery, resulting in a fourteen-hour hostage situation that was broadcast live on television.”
This bank robbery galvanized New York City at the time. Tree years later, Al Pacino gave a phenomenal turn as `Sonny,” in Dog Day Afternoon. Wojtowicz pretty much loved the movie and when he got out of prison after completing a six-year sentence, “he was known by his self-imposed nickname: `The Dog.'"
The Dog pulls out archival footage from the sexual revolution of the 1970s and give a “first-hand perspective on New York's historical gay liberation movement in which Wojtowicz played an active role.”
Directors Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren started filming The Dog in 2002. In their statement, they say “To call him larger than life feels like an understatement. Passionate and profane, The Dog makes no apologies for being who he is: ‘Live every day as if it's your last and whoever doesn't like it can go fuck themselves and a rubber duck.’
The Dog will hit theaters on August 8th and be available On-Demand on August 15th.
