The Expendables 3 gets a softer rating in the US, as its PG-13 status is confirmed.
Well, this seems to go against what The Expendableswas all about in the first place. At one stage, the first two Expendablesmovies were both suggested to be getting PG-13 ratings, before eventually getting given an R in the US. But, as had been forewarned, this time, The Expendables 3 will be a film to, er, take all the family too.
It's been confirmed that the movie has a PG-13 rating in the US, earning its rating for "violence, including intense sustained gun battles and fight scenes, and for language". Not much language, we'd wager.
The whole idea of The Expendables was supposedly to give us an old school action movie, unconstrained by the demands of modern blockbuster movies. It seems a little depressing that it too has followed the path to PG-13 in the hope of further riches.
We say that fully acknowledging that PG-13 allows a lot more than it once did. But still, from earlier comments it seems as though The Expendables 3 has actively targeted getting a softer rating, rather than this being an organic thing. If they've genuinely put together the film they wanted and it happened to be a PG-13, that's one thing. But to cut off the corners to make it fit a PG-13 box? That's the last thing we thought The Expendableswould ever do.
A UK rating has not yet been confirmed. We suspect Lionsgate may go for a 15 over here. If it gets a 12A? Well, that's the path to later Die Hardsequels. Yippee-ki-ay mother f[boom]..

I have a feeling this is to produce an unrated directors cut for more $. I might pass on it though and watch it at home as I usually have a better experience at home, but then again, I might just use this as a date night movie with the wife. I'm sure it will have all the explosiony fun the others had.
I actually think the PG-13 rating allows for a lot less than it did when the rating was created. Just look at one of the first PG-13 movies "Red Dawn" and compare it to the likes of "Die Hard 4" or "SWAT".
