The numbers are in for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Thursday debut, and they are strong. But are they $100 million strong?
Today might be all about the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes—fantastic movie by the way—but last night they went bananas too. About four million bananas at that.
It is now being reported that 20th Century Fox’s healthy Apes reboot franchise has grossed an impressive $4.1 million at the Thursday night box office with screenings that began at 10pm. An impressive and robust number, it is still shy of 20th Century Fox’s previous Thursday night premiere, X-Men: Days of Future Past, which grossed $8.1 million on Thursday before tapping out to a $90 million total for its weekend. However, for an Apes movie this is fantastic news, especially when the well-received Rise of the Planet of the Apes grossed $54.8 million its opening weekend, a number that Dawn of the Plane of the Apes is well on its way to beating.
However, for those hoping that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes might be the first undisputed film to reach over $100 million for its opening weekend in the U.S. (a title that only Transformers: Age of Extinction arguably has), that hat trick seems currently unlikely. While the numbers will undoubtedly be good, it looks like that $100 million question that drives Hollywood studios and journalists mad remains elusive.
