Keira Knightley cannot grow up and act her age in Laggies, Lynn Shelton's new movie that also stars Chloe Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell.
Everyone in the last generation or two has known someone who “lags” behind in a state of perpetual adolescence. The most kind thing some call them are “man-children” and the most Lena Dunham-level cynical simply say “millennials.” And now they can also be called Laggies too.
However, there is no denying that whatever they are, they have grown increasingly to become a new subgenre of dramedy. Whether it’s Kristen Bell or most of the cast of the Apatow crew, there’s a growing trend about telling stories on the folks who never grew up.
Thus enter the particularly harrowing, if apparently pleasant case of Megan (Keira Knightley), a 28-year-old woman still going on 18. With no career prospects and feeling distantly removed from her boyfriend and would-be fiancé (Mark Webber), Megan ends up falling in with a teen clique led by Annika (Chloe Grace Moretz) and becoming her lived in bestie. What it says about this culture when Annika’s dad (Sam Rockwell) is ready to roll with this and even romance Megan remains to be seen.
Laggies, which is written and directed by Lynn Shelton, opens October 24, 2014.
