Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 Coming July 2017

The passage for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean has been a long and perilous one fraught with many reefs and rocks that have been narrowly avoided. Once a 2015 release entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth swashbuckling adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow had seemed to go adrift until now.

Walt Disney Pictures, not lacking in franchises over the next few years with Avengers, Star Wars, and everything in-between, has set Pirates of the Caribbean 5 for the prime box office real estate spot of July 7, 2017.

The film, which is being written by Catch Me If You Can’s Jeff Nathanson and is to be directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg of Kon-Tiki fame, will return Johnny Depp to the role of Jack Sparrow for a fifth time.

And it is a curious placement indeed for the actor. The role turned the respected chameleon actor of independent fare and Tim Burton movies into an overnight international superstar. The first and arguably most beloved Pirates movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) even earned him an Oscar nomination for that year’s Best Actor category.

However, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be out now almost 14 years to the day since that original Jack Sparrow movie. In the meantime since the fourth adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), Depp has experienced some decreased love from fans, including with Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger, and Transcendence. Still, if there is one thing audiences love, it is Depp as Captain Jack. Even though Stranger Tides made less domestically than the first three Pirate movies, it still was the first Jack Sparrow flick to cross $1 billion worldwide.

So, it’s safe to say Disney is making a good bet on witty Jack. Especially in the same month where the next mystery Marvel movie comes out on July 28, 2017.
