Reports of the death of Sony's Spider-Man franchise may have been premature, as The Sinister Six movie has a release date.
Well, so much for Roberto Orci insinuating that the Amazing Spider-Manmovies had an uncertain future. Sony have now decided on a release date for the first of their villain-centric Spider-Man spinoffs, The Sinister Six, slating it for November 16th, 2016.
The Amazing Spider-Man 3, on the other hand, once set for a May 27th, 2016 release date, won't be seen until 2018. Presumably, it will take the place of The Amazing Spider-Man 4 on the Sony Calendar, for May 4th, 2018.
"With 'Sinister Six' in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016," said Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group in a statement.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is "very high" on writer/director Drew Goddard's vision for The Sinister Six, so that's encouraging. However, the idea of having to wait four years before the next installment of the core Spider-Man franchise seems somewhat less encouraging. Perhaps the extra time will be used to address some of the issues that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had, although we assume that director Marc Webb will return.
Still no word on the state of the proposed Venom spinoff or The Amazing Spider-Man 4 although we suspect that word on one or both could come during the San Diego Comic-Con. They also revealed that the Unchartedmovie will hit on June 10th, 2016...formerly The Amazing Spider-Man3slot. Whew. Confused yet?
