Sony's decision to knock The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back to 2018 does not mean it's rebooting the series, it's been confirmed...

Yesterday's announcement from Sony that it's delayingThe Amazing Spider-Man 3 by two years to 2018, slotting Sinister Sixin 2016 instead, has led to some speculation that it's planning another reboot of sorts of the series. As it turns out, that's not likely to be the case.

The Hollywood Reporter has a piece which declares that "privately, Sony admits it is seeking to refresh the brand, but has no major overhaul plans". Director Marc Webb remains attached too, and is expected to complete his trilogy of Spider-Man movies.

Yet there's clearly a problem, with a Sony source apparently saying that The Amazing Spider-Man 2"fell $100m below internal predictions" when its box office takings topped out just north of $700m.

That said, it's been noted that competition was tougher than expected, with films such as Captain America 2, surprise hit Neighborsand Godzillaall taking a bigger than expected amount at the box office.

The Amazing Spider-Man 4has dropped off the schedule altogether, though, and that ties into reports that Andrew Garfield will be hanging up the suit after his third movie.
