During an interview at Comic-Con, Elle Fanning said that a Maleficent sequel is possible, and there has already been talk about it.
Disney’s Marvel Studios may have stoked fan anticipation for billion dollar sequels Saturday in San Diego, but apparently the parent company is eyeing future franchise films beyond the caped and cowled. This was confirmed when Elle Fanning said at Comic-Con that there has been talk for a Maleficent sequel.
While sitting down to do Comic-Con promotion for September’s charming new LAIKA film, The Boxtrolls, Fanning, who plays Princess Aurora (also known as Sleeping Beauty) in Maleficent, said that a sequel to the fairy tale reimagining might happen.
“Possibly,” Fanning said when I asked if we could see a Maleficent 2 one day on the big screen. “I know on set, they were talking about ‘oh, a sequel’ or something. That would be way down the road, because this one we just finished. So, [I’m] not even thinking about that again. But they could be thinking about it. That would be fun.”
Fanning’s take on Sleepy Beauty, which along with the titular Disney villainess was populating San Diego Comic-Con in force this year, was part of the formula that made the Angelina Jolie vehicle a global box office phenomenon. Having currently earned more than $700 million worldwide, Maleficent is the highest grossing family film released in 2014 and has heralded Angelina Jolie as a continued marquee name in big budget Hollywood moviemaking.
Jolie previously said during a Chinese press conference that she might be open to reprising her role as Maleficent in a sequel.
“It’s kind of hard to top her,” Jolie said in June. “She was pretty fun. Maybe I’ll get the chance to play her again.”
It sounds like at least someone at Disney has been thinking about that for a while.
