Alex Kurtzman will direct Universal's Mummy reboot, kicking off their shared monster universe.
Is it even fair to call Universal's next Mummymovie a reboot? The Mummy as a film franchise stretches back over 80 years, has undergone numerous reincarnations (see what I did there?), and in the grand scheme of things, the Stephen Sommers films are really the anomaly. We've known for awhile that the new Mummyfilm would have nothing to do with the most recent franchise, although reports say that this keeps that lighter, adventurous tone rather than a strict horror sensibility.
Enter Alex Kurtzman as director. Not necessrily the first name that springs to mind for a horror project, but there you go. Kurtzman is the third director to be associated with the film, with both Len Wiseman and Andy Muschietti having backed off. The Mummy will be the first film in Universal's Marvel-esque plan to create a shared monster universe with its traditional horror properties like Dracula, The Wolf Man, and Frankenstein.
Meanwhile, what does this mean for Kurtzman's directorial role on Sony's Spider-Man spinoff, Venom? We have no idea...but it probably can't mean anything good, as Venomwas conspicuously absent from Sony's recent announcements about the future of their Spidey franchise.
