Marvel Studios has another out-of-this-world success on their hands as Guardians of the Galaxy posts the biggest Thursday number of 2014.

When Marvel Studios announced that they were turning Guardians of the Galaxy into their final Phase Two film before they release another Avengers movie, many an eyebrow was raised—even in the fan community. You mean the one with a talking raccoon?

Well, once again Marvel gets the last laugh, and if it’s anything like Rocket Raccoon, it is the most real, authentic, and hysterical laugh of their entire lives. Because Guardians of the Galaxy has already broken two records: its $11.2 million Thursday night gross is both the highest Thursday night preview gross on record in August, and it is also the biggest Thursday night debut for any movie in 2014.

This transcends this year’s other superhero preview bows, including X-Men: Days of Future Past’s $8.1 million gross, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 making $8.7 million, and even Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s $10.2 million, which to date had been the highest of 2014.

It is unclear whether this means Guardians of the Galaxy will be the first undisputed film to cross $100 million in a single weekend in the U.S. this year, but it certainly indicates the film’s hype is legitimate. And if you saw it like us last night, you know just how fun this movie is.
