The extended cut of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug has been officially announced. Details here...

Warner Bros has officially announced the extended DVD and Blu-ray edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which is set to land in the UK on November 3rd (November 4th in the US). A digital HD version will be available from late October.

The disc editions will run to five discs, and the movie itself will be extended by a further 25 minutes. Furthermore, nine hours of additional special features will be included in the set.

Whether you've warmed to The Hobbit movies or not, they do generally go to town on these disc releases, with the key new addition being a commentary track from Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens. The middle parts of the documentaries started on the An Unexpected Journey extended disc set are also being included.

The final Hobbit movie, The Battle Of The Five Armies, is set for release in December. Some time in the future, we keep being teased an ultimate six film Middle Earth boxset, but you're unlikely to be shortchanged with the package being put together here.
