MTV's TV series based on the Scream horror franchise has solidified its team as it goes into shooting the pilot.

For horror fans of a certain age, the Scream franchise is something special. Horror purists might take issue with the films, and rightfully so, but if you were a teen or child during the late '90s, the meta-Slasher flick felt fresh, somewhat real, and probably still holds a place in your heart. When Drew Barrymore was cut down in the film’s opening minutes, audiences were shocked, and it signaled that this was surely not your parents’ horror film. The original picture has been parodied more times than you can count, which surely has dulled its impact on younger audiences, but Scream’s twists, turns, and gore may have been more fun than any slasher film in the '90s on its first viewing

Though the franchise tried to gain some new legs with the spirited, yet middling Scream 4, it seems Dimension is giving Ghostface another go-round, but this time on television. Dimension TV and MTV are teaming up for a Scream series. The project has been in development for a while, but now we have some names to attach to it. Jamie Travis, a promising young Toronto-based director, will helm the series’ pilot episode. As for the cast, Willa Fitzgerald (Alpha House, Royal Pains) will portray Emma Duval, a beautiful teen who’s swept up by the popular crowd, which alienates her best friend Audrey Jensen, who is to be played by Amy Forsyth (Torment, Reign). Audrey is the daughter of a pastor and an aspiring filmmaker, because of course you need a film obsessed geek in a Scream adaptation.

John Karna (The Neighbors) will be playing Noah, a computer geek, and you guessed it, a pop culture aficionado who is also Audrey’s best friend.  The rest of the cast is rounded out by Carlson Young (Key & Peele), playing chief popular girl Brooke Maddox, and Amadeus Serafini, who will be the dark and mysterious new kid Kieran Wilcox.

No word on when the pilot for the Scream series will air, but we’ll be following the show’s development closely.

Of curious note, director Wes Craven, who helmed and shepherded the Scream franchise through all four films, had previously been open to the idea of directing the pilot and considered for the position. What his abscence signifies for the TV series is anybody's guess.
