Interview With the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, and more will get another shot at the big screen.

What seems like a lifetime ago, before vampires had infiltrated every possible corner of mainstream culture, a little book called Interview With the Vampire made bloodsuckers cool. As in, actually cool. Sexy. Rock stars, even.

It wasn't long before Anne Rice was cranking out more vampire novels, expanding her world of immortals. The Vampire Chronicles(as they came to be called) has come to span nearly a dozen novels, with the next, Prince Lestat, set for publication in October of 2014. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt brought the first book to life in the Neil Jordan directed Interview With the Vampire, while Queen of the Damned (my favorite of the series) didn't fare quite as well as a 2002 film. Other than that, there hasn't been much live-action in the world of Rice's undead.

That's about to change. Universal Pictures, Imagine Entertainment, and Brian Grazer now have the rights to Rice's entire Vampire Chronicles mythology. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are on board to produce. No other details are available at this time, but we may see Lestat and friends on screen again in the next few years.

That's some serious horror in Universal's stable, now. With the recent announcements that they're developing a "shared monster universe" based on their iconic takes on classic horror characters like Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, and Dracula, their ongoing deal with Blumhouse, and now the Vampire Chronicles, well...there may be enough darkness on the calendar in coming years to compete with Disney's superhero and Star Wars onslaught.
