Can Sinister 2 replicate the success of the first film? We suspect it will, yes. Production is about to begin...
Sinister, the 2012 horror film starring Ethan Hawke was quite shocking, not just because of the scares on the screen, but because of the high praise the film received upon its release. The film garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, who lauded not only the scare tactics deployed, but also the steady hand of director Scott Derrickson. Derrickson pulled from other iconic horror films, but especially paid attention to pictures outside of the genre that could translate well to his story centering on one man's obsession with the truth. Studios were so impressed with Derrickson’s work, it helped him land the directing gig for Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange adaptation.
Sinistergrossed over $87 million worldwide on a $3 million budget, and in today’s day and age, you can’t make that much money without the word “sequel” flashing in the mind’s of producers. True to the trend, Sinister 2 will begin production next week in Chicago, with a release date of August 21, 2015 set for the sequel.
This time around Ciaran Foy (Citadel) sits in the director’s chair, working from a script penned by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, who both collaborated on the original film’s script. The story will take place after the events of Sinister, centering on a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon) and her twin 9-year-old sons who find themselves living in a rural house where strange, evil occurrences begin to happen. So far only James Ransone, the sheriff’s deputy from the original film, is set to return.
