Tim Burton's Batman movie starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson is getting a special edition Blu-ray for its 25th anniversary.
Batman'89 is getting the deluxe Blu-ray treatment in honor of its 25th anniversary, and not a moment too soon. The two-disc set will be released on November 11th. So, while it's a few months late for the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release, it's perfect for the 25th anniversary of its release on VHS. Trust me, if you were a kid in 1989 that was as at least as big a deal as it hitting theaters.
Details on the special features are scarce at the moment, but my fellow bat-expert David Crow speculates that they will be similar to those included on the recent DVD special edition release. We do know that it includes a documentary called Batman: The Birth of the Modern Blockbuster which will detail how pretty much everyone and your dog had a Batman t-shirt, baseball hat, action figure, haircut, or custom syringe set. It was crazy.
While that's all nice and exciting, we do need to talk about the unfortunate packaging.

That documentary about how Batmania swept the country in the lead-up to and aftermath of Batman's release probably understands just how instrumental the perfectly understated poster was in the psychological marketing of that film. I'm not quite sure what the "Diamond Luxe" packaging has to do with the need to mess with that, but hey, it's late, and I'm feeling particularly cranky.
On the other hand, prolific comic book artist Francesco Francavilla posted a quick drawing of Michael Keaton as Batman on his Twitter account in celebration of this announcement. I'd like to pretend that this is the cover, instead. After all, if you're going to deviate from perfection, this is much cooler.
