The WWE's unhinged anti-hero is set to star in the next WWE Films/Lionsgate collaboration in an action movie about police corruption.
When WWE's radical trio of mercenaries the Shield were in full effect, people knew Roman Reigns would be the guy the company intended to push to the top. Seth Rollins would find his role easy enough due to his fantastic aerial ability. It was the unofficial mouthpiece Dean Ambrose whose fate was up in the air and for much of the team's existence he would at times almost just fade into the background compared to his buddies. Ever since they went their separate ways, Rollins has won the Money in the Bank briefcase and Reigns is still hand-picked to be the next big main eventer, yet it seems like Ambrose is the true breakout star of the Shield. He's the one who has been getting the biggest reactions from the crowd and his sleazy, unhinged performance has been making it possible.
Longtime fans of Ambrose since his days as John Moxley in the indies aren't too surprised. The man would deliver promos that seemed too intense for Raw. As he'd ramble on about his horrific childhood and how it would relate to him winning his battles, there were many times when you'd wonder how much of it was the character and how much was him being legitimately insane. He was that good.
Now his success on the mic has given him a starring role in the upcoming film Lockdown, a joint production between WWE Films and Lionsgate. Directed by Stephen Reynolds (Tomb Raider: Ascension) and written by Nathan Brooks and Bobby Lee Darby (who scripted upcoming WWE Films project See No Evil 2), Lockdownwill start filming within the next few weeks.
Lockdownis a story about an honest cop who finds himself at odds with some corrupt coworkers who will go at any length to recover some damning evidence that could incriminate them. Now this good cop has to protect himself and his loved ones in his quest to do what's right.
Despite the claim that Ambrose is "starring" in this movie, we don't know to what extent. Is he the honest cop or is he one of the bad guys trying to make life hell for the real star? If he's just a corrupt goon, Lockdownmight be worth checking out. If he's actually playing that lone cop fighting against the world, then sign me up for watching it ASAP. I don't care how bad it is. Coincidentally, Ambrose and his fellow Shield cohorts were recently reimagined as corrupt officers in the WWE Superstars comic book.
Now, if he is the hero, maybe once he gets his hands on that incriminating evidence, he can team up with Randy Orton's character from WWE Films'That's What I Am and they can "go to the papers" together. Sorry, I'll never get tired of making that reference.
