The Nice Guys, a Shane Black film starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, has been set to open in June 2016.
Directing the only superhero movie to earn $1 billion worldwide in the last two years tends to give you more clout. Indeed, Shane Black seems to be back with a vengeance as his new detective thriller starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, The Nice Guys, shapes up into something that will be anything but nice to its competition.
With a plum June 17, 2016 release date selected by Warner Bros., The Nice Guys is looking like a strong summertime entry for the studio, which also marks the first collaboration since 1998’s Lethal Weapon 4 for director Black and producer Joel Silver.
Hopefully in the vein of Black’s other written-and-directed detective thriller (and cult comedy classic) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Nice Guys tells the story of a low rent 1970s gumshoe (Ryan Gosling) who partners with some hired muscle (Russell Crowe) to discover the whereabouts of a missing girl and how it relates to the death of a porn star. The mystery takes them into a web of seedy Tinsletown scheming faster than you can say James Ellroy.
Currently, the June 16, 2016 slot is playing a game of chicken all its own between Pixar’s Finding Dory and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 3 (we suspect Pixar will win this round), but this heavily adult-oriented fare should have plenty of room with whatever animation it opens next to.
