Sony has hired Mama director Andrés Muschietti to lens a big screen adaptation of the 2005 gaming classic, Shadow of the Colossus.
Arguably one of the greatest video game experiences of all time—one that challenges the assertion that gaming cannot occasionally achieve the status of art—made a monstrous step forward in its journey of getting to the big screen.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has tapped Andrés Muschietti to direct a film version of Shadow of the Colossus.
The once relatively unknown Argentine filmmaker made big waves when his short film “Mama” hit the film festival circuit, and eventually YouTube, catching the eyes of Universal Pictures, as well as Guillermo del Toro. That led to the opportunity of helming the 2013 feature length adaptation of the short into a blockbuster hit: Mama. The ambiance of that grueling horror picture clearly struck a chord with Sony that has now hired Muschietti to lens epic quest of a young man in a land of giants.
The game Shadow of the Colossus was a PlayStation 2 juggernaut from 2005 that relied on its simple, mythic premise to lull gamers into a far more complex mythology. Focused on the character of Wander, he is a lonely hero that is desperate to save his lady love, the mysterious Mono who seems to have been sacrificed by demons. In order to rescue the maiden, Wander makes a deal with a demon, Dormin, to liberate her from eternal torment. Along the way, he takes the challenge of freeing the land from 16 colossal beings that would appear to control it. But as so rarely glimpsed in gaming, there are serious consequences for such a quest.
Muschietti is also bringing aboard his sister Barbara Muschietti, who produced last year’s Mama at Universal. Kevin Misher will also be producing from a screenplay by Seth Lochhead (Hanna).
