Simon Kinberg speaks out about what mutants we can expect back for X-Men: Apocalypse and if there is any recasting in the works.
With production on X-Men: Apocalypse appearing to move full steam ahead after the robust and successful run of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which with almost $750 million worldwide is the highest grossing X-Men film to date, fan speculation is through the X-Jet.
Yet, among the many theories being bandied around, one of the biggest is if any of the “Future” mutants from Days of Future Past will return for X-Men: Apocalypse. It is already well known that Apocalypse will continue a First Class trilogy that stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence. However, beyond the returning Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, could we see the likes of Kitty Pryde or Colossus again?
During a new interview with Yahoo, Kinberg said, “The X-Men film they’re working on right now, that everyone knows, is X-Men: Apocalypse, and that really follows the story of the let’s say “First Class” X-Men: Jen Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nick Hoult, and others of that generation of X-Men. So, in future X-Men films? Perhaps. But in Apocalypse, it’ll really be a continuation of the let’s say past of Days of Future Past.”
When asked further if they might recast the original X-Men members (Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm) for the new adventure—which Bryan Singer has hinted at—Kinberg said, “If we included some of the original X-Men, like Storm, and Jean, and Scott, and others, yeah we would have to recast them, because Apocalypse takes place a good 20 years before X1, which was insanely was 10 or 15 years ago.
“It would be very hard to do. Halle and Famke, and Jimmy, and others have done such wonderful jobs of bringing those characters to life and are so identified as those actors with the parts now. So, it‘ll be a tall task, but I also would have said before First Class that there’d be no way we could find actors who could stand alongside Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. I think we managed to do that with Michael Fassenbeder and James finding their own interpretations of the characters, and not doing an interpretation. So, are we going to have to recast? If some of those characters were in the movie we would, but we’ll see.”
A cagey answer, but it seems almost certain that we’ll be seeing new incarnations of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm in the next X-Men movie, in addition to the first rate First Class.
