Gone Girl director David Fincher spoke with Disney about directing Star Wars: Episode VII.
One thing that Disney has done quite well with the Star Wars franchise, is they've assembled an incredible assortment of directors to guide the franchise. JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson, Josh Trank, and Gareth Edwards are all solid names, and there are others being lined up for additional standalone flicks, as well. But here's one more name for you: David Fincher.
It seems that Mr. Fincher was approached when Star Wars: Episode VIIwas first being floated about. Obviously, they settled on JJ Abrams, but here's a little info from David Fincher about how things went down, and why they might not have happened. After confirming that he did speek to Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy about the project he went on to say:
"It's tricky...My favourite is The Empire Strikes Back. If I said, 'I want to do something more like that,' then I'm sure the people paying for it would be like, 'No! You can't do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!'"
Here's another interesting take he has on the saga:
"I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters' folly, the ultimate folly of man... I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it's kind of gone by Return Of The Jedi."
Ah, what could have been. The JJ Abrams directed Star Wars: Episode VII is in theaters on December 18th, 2015.
