The Australian government lures Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, starring Johnny Depp, to Oz. The price of doing so? $21.6m...
Well, it's definite. Johnny Depp is going to be reprising the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, which is heading into cinemas in 2017. And we now learn that the shoot will take place in Queensland, Australia, beginning early next year.
Principal photography is expected to begin in February, and Senator Brandis, Federal Minister For The Arts in Australia, announced that "the Australian Government is delighted to have secured high-profile movie franchisePirates Of The Caribbean to film in Australia with a contribution of $21.6 million." That's not a bad piece of change, which he declared to be "Australia's largest ever contribution to the financing of a major film."
For those wanting to argue, not entirely unreasonably, as to whether governments should be investing in major studio blockbuster movies, two things. Firstly, the film is expected to bring around $100m of business into the Queensland area. And secondly, at least the Australian government has been honest about it.
Pirates Of The Caribbean 5is to be directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, and has a July 7th 2017 release date.
