After months of negotiations, Joaquin Phoenix is no longer in the running to play Doctor Strange for Marvel.

Stephen Strange is proving a difficult role for Marvel to cast. Joaquin Phoenix has long been the frontrunner for the title role in Marvel's Doctor Strange movie. So strongly, in fact, that many were almost certain that he would be announced in the role at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. This didn't come to pass, and negotiations have been ongoing since then, with all reports indicating that it was his reluctance to commit to Marvel's traditional six movie deal.

Whatever the reason, Mr. Phoenix is no longer in negotiations for the part, and Marvel is now meeting with other actors for the role. In the past those "otehr actors" that have been mentioned in connection with the role include Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto, and most recently, Ethan Hawke.Deadlinedismisses the talk that Ethan Hawke has already signed on for the part, calling it "speculation run wild." This may be so. But the news that Phoenix is out does put this cryptic tweet from Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson in a bit of a new light, doesn't it?

Doctor Strange is set to go into production in early 2015, and is probably going to be released on July 8th, 2016.
