Minecraft: The Movie is still coming, from The LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee. But don't expect it just yet...
Since word first broke that Warner Bros was potentially looking into making a movie based around videogaming phenomenon Minecraft, things have gone quiet. There's been no new news on the project itself, short of that The LEGO Movie's Roy Lee is producing. Outside of the movie world though, there's been the small matter of Minecraftparent company Mojang being eaten up by Microsoft for a spare few billion dollars (which we talked about in more detail here).
However, that hasn't derailed the film. In a new interview with The Guardian, Mojang's COO, Vu Bui, has revealed that the movie is still very much in the works. It's also very much in its early stages.
Minecraft The Movie is in development, and Bui suggested that it may not be until 2017 or 2018 when we see it on the big screen. Pushed as to whether the film would be based around animation or live action, he said that "a movie takes year, especially a large-budget movie like this."
"It's still in the beginning stages, and there really isn't a clear picture yet of what this is going to be. Once there is, I'm sure we'll share more."
Bui also revealed that the film would focus on a story within the Minecraftworld, rather than "the story within Minecraft."
Our guess would be that Warner Bros would follow The LEGO Movie route and opt for animation, but a decision doesn't appear to have been made yet. It may be a little while yet before we hear more.
