Billy Bob Thornton has given an update on the missing, presumed dead, Bad Santa 2. Spoiler: it isn't dead.
It feels like we've been writing about a potential sequel to Bad Santa for a good few years now, without any sign of the film itself moving forward. It's become one of those projects that gets talked about, but is looking decreasingly likely to happen.
But then maybe there's a glimmer of hope. Billy Bob Thornton, who was the main reason to watch the first Bad Santa, has given an update on the project. And it still seems to be active.
Speaking at Loyola Marymount University, Thornton said that "we're just waiting for a script," adding that "we're never going to beat the first one, but you got to get as close as you can. You can't just go and do it half way, so we're waiting for something that's close enough."
He added that "it’ll do real well I imagine and people will say 'well, it wasn’t as good as the first one’ and we’ll say 'yeah, we knew it wouldn’t be’ but I think it should be fun."
They should stick that on the poster.
It's still unclear who's going to direct the film, mind. Steve Pink had been linked for some time (he's just put the finishing touches to Hot Tub Time Machine 2), and then Doug Ellin was rumoured to be on board, before he went off to make the Entouragemovie. Maybe things will become clearer once Thornton gets his hands on a Bad Santa 2screenplay that he likes...
