DC has played its cards. Marvel has played its cards. So what's Sony up to with its Spider-Man movie universe?
The deafening silence from Sony over the future of its planned Spider-Manmovie universe is doing little to dampen down the rumour mill. The last we heard, the planned Venommovie was off the schedule, and the Sinister Six film - that Drew Goddard has been involved with - would introduce a new actor as Spider-Man. At this stage, it'd be a surprise to many if The Amazing Spider-Man 3actually went ahead as originally planned.
Something else that was rumoured was that Sony would be the first out of the traps with a superhero movie headlined by a woman. The obvious choice, given that she was seeded in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is Black Cat. But while Sony has been making its mind up, both Marvel and DC have stolen its thunder. Marvel announced a Captain Marvelmovie earlier this week, and Warner Bros/DC will have a standaloneWonder Woman feature, starring Gal Gadot.
But rumours surrounding Sony's plans continue. And the latest? That it's exploring - albeit nothing more at this stage - the idea of a superhero team-up movie, featuring leading female characters from the Spider-Man universe.
It's all part of a possible project by the name of Glass Ceiling, that's being reported as an idea that Sony "has been kicking around." That's a long way, granted, from "ordering a script for", but it's all we've got for the time being. Black Cat and Spider-Girl, we'd imagine, are shoo-ins for the film should it happen.
What's clear is that Sony needs to sort its Spider-Man universe out soon though. Further rumours persist that it's in talks with Marvel over including Spider-Man in Avengers movies, something that Kevin Feige, Marvel's head honcho, had the chance to debunk but didn't.
The fact that there's been no formal announcement suggests that Sony is doing some serious retooling work on its Spider-Man films anyway. Until it says anything official though, the rumours are just going to keep on coming...
