Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of Drive, is now set to tackle a female-led horror film next: The Neon Demon.
Nicolas Winding Refn, who won the Best Director prize at Cannes for 2011’s hypnotic Drive, is now driven by a new inspiration: the terror of women, or at least “vicious beauty.”
The filmmaker’s newest film has been announced as The Neon Demon, a horror film with a female led cast. As reported in Deadline, Refn had the idea when he awakened to a sudden realization.
“One morning, I woke and realized I was both surrounded and dominated by women,” Refn said. “Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty.”
This marks Refn’s first film since last year’s Only God Forgives, which was co-financed and co-distributed by France’s Gaumont and Wild Bunch, who are partnering on The Neon Demon. The Danish filmmaker’s other credits include Bronson, which featured Tom Hardy’s star-making role, and Vahalla Rising. In addition, Refn is producing a Barbarella TV series at the moment.
The Neon Demon is set to begin production in early 2015.
