Just as shooting was set to begin, Robert De Niro and Robert Pattinson's new movie has been shut down...
This doesn't happen on reasonably high profile projects at the last minute very often. Just as filming was about to get started on the film Idol's Eye, a new heist thriller, the plug has been pulled by its backer, Benaroya Pictures.
In a statement released by the company, it said that "due to the criteria for financing not being met by producers, Benaroya Pictures has formally decided to discontinue financing the motion picture titled Idol's Eye." Bugger. We just said all of that in the first paragraph.
The film was set to star Robert De Niro, Robert Pattinson, and Rachel Weisz, and production was all set to begin in Toronto. De Niro signed up in May, once the money fell into place. The problem, according to Deadline, is that the other producing partners hadn't got their funds in place in time.
Olivier Assaya was set to direct Idol's Eye, and the aforementioned statement goes on to add that "Benaroya Pictures plans to retain the rights of the film and move forward with production on the picture after we generate a revised script and assemble a new filmmaking team."
We'd be surprised if Messrs Pattinson and De Niro wait around too long for that to happen. We guess it depends how much they liked the script. The contracted crew, however, are the ones most likely to find themselves out of pocket...
