Universal has hired Aaron Guzikowski to write the new The Wolfman reboot just in time for their shared Universal Monsters Universe.

Quite honestly, 2010’s The Wolfman remake got more right than it did wrong. A visually sumptuous and stunning callback to the gothic horrors of yesteryear, the Joe Johnson film’s set designs and lunar-lit cinematography were almost as gorgeous as Rick Baker’s Oscar winning make-up design.

Oh sure, the screenplay was a complete mess and the ending was almost as disappointing as Bencio Del Toro’s lead performance, but it got a lot closer to why Universal Pictures’ 1930s and ‘40s horror movies are still classics than Van Helsing did (or Dracula Untold for that matter…). Nevertheless, Universal is ready to start from scratch again with character who is getting the reboot treatment just in time for a planned Universal Monsters shared movie universe.

In passing while discussing the future of the Fast and Furious franchise, Deadline dropped a far more intriguing blurb about how the studio has tapped Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners, Contraband) to write a new screenplay for The Wolfman. Granted, there is no director attached nor does it have a release date, but it is certainly showing that Universal is not messing around about their shared monster universe that Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) is helping oversee, including by directing The Mummy reboot, which is being penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) for a 2016 release date. It should also be kept in mind that Universal has an open slot in 2017 for an unnamed Universal Monster movie that the Wolf Man could howl his way into. Then again, there is also another untitled monster mash film being scripted by Noah Hawley (Fargo) that could have eyes for that release date.

In any event, The Wolf Man is an essential movie monster. After all, he is the reason that Hollywood made the first shared “Cinematic Movie Universe” ever with 1943’s iconic (in some circles) Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. Indeed, we detailed that long, kooky road that made the Universal Monsters sharing the same universe possible in Universal Monsters: How the Wolf Man created the First Cinematic Universe.
