Phil Lord and Chris Miller talk about what to expect from The Lego Batman Movie spin-off that's in the pipeline.

When The Lego Movie opened last February, it took everyone by surprise just how terrific this little movie about pop culture-fluent toys could be. And a large part of that is thanks to writers and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. With plastic building blocks, they showcased their irreverence for all sacred geek items, including most memorably the Batman.

Voiced by Will Arnett, Batman stole the show. Hence, The Lego Batman Movie now enjoying a February 17, 2017 release date—over a year before we get the official sequel to The Lego Movie. And despite being scripted by Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and directed by Chris McKay (editor of The Lego Movie), Lord and Miller are staying on to produce the spin-off that will fully explore Arnett’s Batman persona.

Calling this a reverse engineered strategy from Marvel, where they did The Avengers with their first entry in The Lego Movie, Lord and Miller chatted with Empire about how they’ll be paying homage (if that’s what you want to call it) to every cinematic era of the Dark Knight.

“Rest assured that every era of Batman filmmaking will be acknowledged,” Miller said. “There have been so many interpretations of Batman, and there is so much to pay with there. There are 40 versions of his origin story alone!”

They also talked about the possibility of actually making a 23 Jump Street, despite viciously mocking the concept during the credits of their last movie.

“It’s quite possible,” Miller said. “We’ve been developing something with Rodney Rothman, who was one of the writers on 22 Jump Street, who’s written a script, and it’s yet crazier. Completely different. Who knows if it’ll all come together or how?”

If it’s anything like the last two, we sure hope that it does.
