Maleficent's Brenton Thwaites has been cast as the second lead to Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
After some speculation about who will be the next young, strapping male co-lead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, it appears that Disney has selected Johnny Depp’s co-star. Obviously, Captain Jack Sparrow would be proud.
As broken by an unnamed source from TheWrap (so take it with the faintest hint of salt), Brenton Thwaites of The Giver has been tapped to star in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Earlier this month, reports flooded in that Thwaites, who also starred as the requisite prince of Disney’s Maleficent, was on a short-list of potential pirating co-stars that included George Mackay, Taron Egerton, Sam Keeley, and Ansel Elgort.
Thwaites obviously has a history with Disney due to the Maleficent connection, and he also has been in auditions with the current Pirates directing team, Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki). Of course, whether the matinee Pirate roles will be the launch pad they turned out to be for Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley from the original movie or more of the steppingstone that Sam Claflin and Astrid Berges-Frisbey experienced with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (who have since seen larger success in Hunger Games and King Arthur franchises), remains to be seen.
The Wrap also reports that Javier Bardem continues to circle the leading villain role of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush are expected to return as well.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sets sail July 7, 2017.
