The director of Dallas Buyers Club has been tapped to helm a musical biopic about Janis Joplin starring Amy Adams.
We can assure you that there is nothing cheap about this thrill, because it appears the long talked about Janis Joplin biopic starring Amy Adams is gaining traction. Jean-Marc Vallée, who just directed Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto to Oscars in last year’s Dallas Buyers Club, has been tapped to now helm the untitled biography movie about one the pioneering women of rock and roll music.
This certainly adds to Vallée’s growing biopic credentials, as in addition to Dallas Buyers Club and Joplin, he also helmed this fall’s Reese Witherspoon vehicle Wild, the true story of a post-divorce woman finding a new life by walking the Pacific Crest Trail. He also has Demolition, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts, scheduled for next year.
Adams has long been trying to get a Janis Joplin movie made. She has been attached to the project since 2010 when City of God’s Fernando Meirelles had been slated to direct. With a screenplay by Ron and Theresa Terry, it appears that Adams will finally be able to meet “Bobby McGee.”
The newfound pedigree of Vallée also will be helpful. Because while Adams has some attention for her turn as Margaret Keane in Tim Burton’s upcoming Big Eyes, Witherspoon is leading attention at the moment for Wild. Adams, who is also well known to fans for playing Lois Lane, has already procured five Academy Award nominations (but no wins yet) for films that include Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, and American Hustle.
Adams is also preparing for production on the Justice League comic book movies from Warner Bros.
