Sony dropped the biopic of Steve Jobs, but Universal has now snapped up the film, which Danny Boyle is to direct.
UPDATE: Universal Pictures has now officially picked this project up. That should ensure that the film gets into production over the next few months, as had been planned. Here's our original story...
Sony seems to have reached the end of its tether with its planned biopic of Steve Jobs. Based on Walter Isaacson's biography, it recruited Aaron Sorkin to pen the screenplay for the film, and the idea was to reunite him with his The Social Network director, David Fincher.
Fincher, however, has been one of a line of people who have passed on the project. For some time, Leonardo DiCaprio was linked with playing Jobs, for instance, before opting for other projects. Then Christian Bale was also linked, but that came to nothing.
Sony did attract Danny Boyle to direct the film, and Seth Rogen is believed to be taking on the role of Steve Wozniak in the movie. Furthermore, Michael Fassbender is now the running favourite to play Jobs himself.
Yet Sony has had enough. The studio has put the project into turnaround, and Deadlinenow reports that Universal may be stepping in to make the film instead. It'd certainly need someone to come in quickly and rescue the project, as the plan had been to get filming underway in the next few months. It looks like Universal may still be able to do that.
