Guillermo del Toro's mooted film of Justice League Dark might just be at a pivotal point of its development. Over to you, Warner Bros...
When Warner Bros announced its slate of DC movies a month or two back, there were a couple of notable omissions. The big screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandmanfor one, which Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jack Thorne, and David S Goyer are all involved with in various roles. The explanation for it not being part of the announcement is that Sandmanwas published under the Vertigo imprint, rather than the DC name. Vertigo movies are being dealt with separately by Warner Bros.
Then there's Justice League Dark, which came out under the DC Comics banner, but has no shortage of Vertigo characters in it. The film take on it has been known about since 2013, and it's going under the working title of Dark Universe.
Guillermo del Toro is overseeing the adaptation of the material to the screen, and Justice League Dark will sit aside from the main Justice League line of movies. No surprise either: Justice League Darkattracts a rather dark collection of "heroes." You'll find the likes of Swamp Thing, Black Orchid, Deadman, Frankenstein, Constantine, and The Spectre in there for a start.
So what's the current state of the movie? Glad you asked, as progress has been made. Forbesis reporting that the completed screenplay forJustice League Dark was delivered to Warner Bros this week, and it's now over to the studio to work out what it wants to do. Forbesreports that "the studio's reactions to the script will be coming back in a few days," so we're very much at the fingers crossed stage.
Del Toro's immediate priority will be polishing off and promoting 2015's Crimson Peak, and then bringingPacific Rim 2 to the screen for April 2017. Justice League Darkmight just be next in the queue after those, though...
