In other "sun rises in east" news, Benedict Cumberbatch has been confirmed as the lead for the Doctor Strange movie.
You knew this was coming, and now it's official: Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange for Marvel. The Doctor Strange movie is due on November 4th, 2016 (that's a mere 23 months from now!), and it's directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).
The announcement comes with the closest thing to an official logline for the movie we've yet seen:
The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige in a statement. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
Timing, as they say, is everything, and Mr. Cumberbatch is currently racking up accolades for his performance as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. Of course, the fact that he's signed on right before some re-shoots on Avengers: Age of Ultron are scheduled to take place is convenient and helpful for a number of things.
