Sony and Marvel have had discussions about letting Marvel Studios produce a new Spider-Man trilogy.

We've avoided talking about the Sony hack, because it's really an ugly piece of work that has allowed far too much personal information that shouldn't be out there to get out into the world. We don't condone it, and we don't pretend to understand it, and you won't see any of the more salacious stuff on Den of Geek.

But this latest piece of information, well, this is news. It's not about backbiting or people's salaries. It's something that will make fans very happy.

There have been high level discussions at Sony about allowing Marvel Studios to make Spider-Man movies. An e-mail as recent as October 30th revealed that Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad contacted motion picture chief Amy Pascal about allowing Marvel Studios to produce a trilogy of Spider-Man movies, while Sony would still have "creative control, marketing, and distribution."

The possibility of Peter Parker appearing in Captain America: Civil War, was also on the table. Apparently, however, "the talks broke down" (which is unsurprising, given the stakes), and now Sony is planning a summit in January to determine how they're going to handle the franchise going forward. If nothing else, it sounds like the current Amazing Spider-Man franchise is going to undergo some significant changes, even though future movies will remain with Sony.

Unless, of course, they end up going back to the table with Marvel. If nothing else, this confirms Kevin Feige's cryptic remarks at October's huge Marvel Phase Three event that "anything that wasn't specifically and obviously revealed today is either not true at all, or still rumor until it's worked out."

One other big detail that emerged, is that Sony considered an animated Spider-Man comedy from The Lego Movie team of Chris Miller and Phil Lord. This sounds far more interesting than any of the Spider-Man spinoff projects currently being discussed, let alone The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
