Roberto Orci won't be directing the next Star Trek film. But Jonathan Frakes has been in touch with JJ Abrams about taking on the job.

Well, it's a long shot, but following the departure of Roberto Orci from the director's chair of the next Star Trekmovie (appreciating he was never confirmed as director), Jonathan Frakes has expressed his keenness to take on the job.

Frakes, who of course played Commander Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation has directed two Trekmovies to date. Those would be Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. And in a chat with Komonews, he confirmed that "I would love that job."

In an enthusiastic radio interview, Frakes added that "I say, unabashedly, I'd be great at it and would love to do it!"

Frakes has made contact with JJ Abrams, who is producing the movie, and his agent has been in touch with Paramount. And he said that "I'm trying to keep the lid on how excited I am about the possibility, knowing it's such a long shot. But there's nothing I would like better."

We'd be surprised if Frakes got the job, in truth. But we've a lot of time for his Star Trek movies.

Edgar Wright has been rumoured thus far, and we'll keep you posted as we hear more...
