There's a new shortlist for the job of Star Trek 3 director, and these are some serious names...
Star Trek is on impulse power at the moment. With the third film in the rebooted franchise tentatively scheduled for a summer 2016 release date, it just lost director Roberto Orci, and now needs someone in that center seat to give the orders. Early reports indicated that Edgar Wright was on Paramount's viewscreen, but this latest report makes it look like he's fallen off their sensors.
The latest batch of names who could take over the Star Trek franchise is an impressive one, though. Here they are:
Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes)
Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game)
Daniel Espinosa (the upcoming Child 44 starring Tom Hardy)
Justin Lin (Fast & Furious)
Duncan Jones (the Moonand Source Code director who I would like to see direct anything and everything)
Of these, I have to wonder how Duncan would fit Star Trek 3 (or Star Trek 13) into a schedule that already has the Warcraft movie set for 2016. Also, recent rumors suggest that Universal is looking to lure Lin back for potentially two more Fast and Furious sequels, making it problematic to also be doing Star Trek at Paramount.
UPDATED: It looks like we can forget about Duncan Jones, as he just tweeted out that he knows nothing about anything involving him with Star Trek, and that after Warcraft, well, he's not in a hurry to do another franchise pic.
Very flattering being on short list for Star Trek, but won't be doing it. Absolutely MUST make my own thing next, or I'll die of old age!
