Gore Verbinski and Steve Carell won't now be teaming up for a new North Korean-set thriller, as its backer pulls out of the project.

Here's a further ramification of the fallout from the Sony hack: a new Steve Carell thriller, that was to be set in North Korea, has been abandoned.

This comes after Sony Pictures confirmed that it had cancelled the release of the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy The Interview, following a terror threat against those who intended to see it in cinemas. The roots of the threat, and the hack that Sony has been on the receiving end on, apparently point back to North Korea, whose authorities had objected strenuously to The Interview.

Now, giving a further victory to the hackers/cyberterrorists, the thus-far unnamed Steve Carell-headlined thriller is unlikely to go ahead. Production company New Regency had put the film together, which Gore Verbinski was set to direct from a script by Steve Conrad. It seems that 20th Century Fox has turned down the chance to distribute the film, and without an outlet for it - plus given what Sony has been going through - the film's been pulled by New Regency. After all, what other studio is likely to want to distribute it now?

Just a few days ago, the Sony hack seemed to be more about giggling at Channing Tatum's emails. Now, two films that we know of have been scrapped. We suspect further consequences will be felt for some time to come.

Deadline.
