As North Korean authorities warn of "grave consequences" if the US rejects a joint enquiry, Sony still has plans to release The Interview...

Well, since Sony announced just last Wednesday that it had pulled the release of the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy The Interview, following threats made against moviegoers, quite a lot has happened.

We're guessing you know the story so far. Sony's servers were hacked by cyberterrorists, with apparent links to North Korea. At first, it was leaked emails that were being scrutinised, but then a more sinister threat came to the fore, against cinemas in the US that were set to show The Interview. That's a very simplified sum-up of the story.

Sony, having had a month that could best be described as 'tricky,' pulled the film, and has faced growing criticism for doing so. And now, from President Obama downwards, there's growing anger that an apparent threat from North Korea has led to a Seth Rogen comedy being apparently banned.

Over the weekend then, there were more developments.

Firstly, the North Korean's foreign ministry (crikey, we never thought we'd be writing stuff like this at Den Of Geek) has hit back at the US, accusing it of "spreading groundless allegations" over its involvement with the cyberterrorist attack.

It offered to set up a joint enquiry with the US, adding that if America turned this down, there would be "grave consequences." Which kind of took the edge of what was sounding like a friendly offer.

Now, however, Sony might just be backtracking on its decision to not release The Interview. Over the weekend, a Sony lawyer, David Boies, appeared on the NBC show Meet The Press, and he said that "Sony only delayed this. Sony has been fighting to get this picture distributed. It will be distributed."

He added that "how it's going to be distributed, I don't think anybody knows quite yet. But it's going to be distributed". As things stand though, it's understood the even video on demand services are reluctant to carry The Interview, presumably for fear of finding themselves at the mercy of cyberterrorists themselves.

Whatever happens, it seems the story of The Interview is a long way from done. We'd still wager The Interview 2is a long shot, though.
