ORIGINAL STORY:
And as we all wind down for the Holiday break, it appears that Sony, or at least Alamo Drafthouse, has one last goodie to stuff early in our collective stocking: Seth Rogen and James Franco’s The Interview will be screening in select locations around the country made available by the Alamo Drafthouse!
The theater chain was the first to break the happy news by announcing that Sony gave them the go-ahead to release the controversial film in American cinemas earlier this morning.
"We cannot imagine the pressures that have been affecting Sony, at all levels of the organization they have been under attack,” Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League said. “Amidst this unwarranted chaos, they have regrouped and listened to the public, the government and the exhibition community and responded with resolve and determination. At 10:45am, Sony bookers approved screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and other art house, and independent theaters across the country.”
This is the greatest Christmas gift at all for Americans of any denomination. As previously reported, Sony pulled the release of the film after most major theater chains opted not to screen The Interview—including AMC, Regal, and Carmike—albeit Sony gave them the option.
This was in reaction to a month-long humiliation endured by Sony Pictures Entertainment at the hands of hackers named “the Guardians of Peace,” which culminated in the organization threatening any theater that showed the film with an attack reminiscent of 9/11.
“Remember the 11th of September 2001,” the message read.
The Guardians of Peace have since been explicitly placed as connected with the North Korean regime that has previously called the releasing of The Interview “an act of war.”
Whether Sony finally ponied up its bravery to do the right thing out of a sense of patriotism or shaming at the hands of U.S. President Barack Obama doesn’t really matter, we’re just glad this movie is out.
We encourage if it is playing within driving distance of your hometown via Drafthouse or an independent theater that you see it. Bring your friends. See it again, and make sure social media is lit up like a Christmas tree with laughter over how Kim Jong-un is depicted in the film.
Remember that there are many other films that foreign countries have banned out of offense, including these 16 some didn’t want you to see. Soon, foreign powers will know how to keep anyone from seeing them—or hard-hitting documentaries and scathing news reports from journalists—if this comes to pass.
“Two days till Christmas, and I am proud to be an America,” League said. That should make all of us.
Seth Rogen’s celebratory tweet can be seen below.
The people have spoken! Freedom has prevailed! Sony didn't give up! The Interview will be shown at theaters willing to play it on Xmas day!
