The Into the Woods star speaks out on those pesky rumors about her playing Carol Danvers in a Marvel movie.
Marvel Studios and Emily Blunt have been dancing around each other for a long time, with Blunt reportedly offered the roles of Black Widow and Peggy Carter in the past (both of which she had to turn down due to contractual or scheduling conflicts). So it’s no surprise that Blunt’s name has surfaced as a leading contender to play Carol Danvers in the Captain Marvel movie that the studio has planned for 2018. But ask Blunt about it -- as we did at a recent roundtable interview for her new film, Into the Woods -- and she has no idea what’s happening.
"It’s funny ‘cause I’m hearing this Captain Marvel thing from a lot of people,” she admitted. “I have no official offer, whatsoever. No one’s called. I don’t know where the hell it’s come from, in all honesty.” But would she be interested? “For me, I just think that the part has got to be awesome. I just want to play great parts, and it’s sometimes hard to find (them) within those big superhero movies. The female parts are not usually great, but recently, they’ve been better. I don’t know. It has to be the right thing.”
We can certainly see Blunt as Danvers and would not be surprised if the British actress made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point in the near future. But you can probably rule out a similar situation for her onscreen husband in Into the Woods, actor/comedian James Corden, who launched into a bit of a tirade when it was mentioned that Into the Woods, with its mash-up of various characters and stories, felt like “The Avengers for fairy tales.”
“I spend almost no time thinking about The Avengers,” proclaimed the soon-to-be-host of The Late Late Show. “I literally could not spend less of my day thinking about it, and I’m constantly amazed by the volume of adults who do. Each to their own and I wish them well, but I do not. It’s preposterous. I don’t think I’m talking myself out of a big Marvel franchise. I don’t think it’s coming, anytime around the corner. But I do find the whole notion of it odd. Just think about how much of your day you’re acting. How much are you getting to act? Really and genuinely, if you’re an actor and you’re in those movies, what is your day’s acting? I don’t know. I find it strange.”
There you have it! No Marvel superheroes in Corden’s future -- but we hope there is one in Blunt’s.
Into the Woods is out in theaters now.
